If you have severe withdrawal symptoms, you may need to stay at a live-in treatment program. Addiction happens when you use amphetamines to get high or improve performance. You are not able to control your use of it and you need it to get through daily life.

Due to the potential for severe withdrawal effects, treating amphetamine addiction is usually a multistep process that focuses on slowly tapering off the drug instead of stopping it suddenly. What Side Effects Are Associated With Amphetamines?

If you take an immediate-release amphetamine, wait at least four to six hours before drinking any alcohol. If you take an extended-release amphetamine, wait at least eight hours before drinking alcohol. Stimulants increase the activity of your central nervous system or the part of your brain that sends messages to nerves to tell them how to complete their jobs. Addiction to amphetamines is devastating for interpersonal relations and adversely impacts a person’s life.

At a minimum, reduction in MA/AMPH use (e.g. days used or reduction in MA/AMPH-positive UDS) is required for assessment of efficacy. The reliance on extended periods of ‘abstinence’ as a primary endpoint does not always reflect participant treatment goals and is a somewhat insensitive marker of clinically meaningful change in substance use. However, further work is required to determine outcomes that are both clinically meaningful and meaningful to consumers.

Like atomoxetine, viloxazine comes in brand-name (Qelbree) and generic pills that are taken once a day, with or without food. It’s rare, but stimulant medications may trigger depression or even suicidal thoughts. Inpatient treatment comprises 24/7 care including safe housing and often also involves more intensive medical attention. Outpatient treatment offers the same programming as inpatient treatment but allows a person to live off-site. Lisdexamfetamine may be preferred if there is increased concern for misuse by the patient or a household member, as its chemically-phased release allows for once-daily dosing and may theoretically deter abuse. Lisdexamfetamine is available as capsules or chewable tablets, and typical daily dosages range from 20 mg to 70 mg.

Of course it is possible just to take the pills and experience a mild high that way. However, some people crush the pills and snort them, creating a faster, stronger high. One of the quickest ways to get high from amphetamine or methamphetamine is to dissolve the powder in water and inject it. This method gets the drug into the bloodstream and to the brain almost immediately, creating an intense high. Doctors can prescribe amphetamines to people living with ADHD, among other conditions. People may also use the drugs in an unprescribed manner, such as to stay awake for a study deadline or to suppress appetite.

Therapy

Similarly, while women were often excluded by the study design, no study examined only women. It is unknown how generalisable any of the results reviewed here are outside of the context in which they were conducted, and it is unwise therefore to combine results across populations. Three studies examined sustained/extended-release oral methylphenidate in addition to the study reporting methylphenidate versus aripiprazole discussed earlier. All three were in the outpatient setting and used the same dose (54 mg po OD).

Some very severe findings may include increases in systolic and diastolic blood pressure, tachycardia, dysrhythmias, hypertensive emergencies, and stroke.
